The platinum rule

Everyone is familiar with the concept of the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do onto you.” It’s timeless and a classic, not to mention good advice.

At 101 Mobility, we subscribe to another rule of thumb called the Platinum Rule, commonly attributed to Dr. Tony Allessandra. Here is what Allessandra says about the Platinum Rule:

The Golden Rule implies the basic assumption that other people would like to be treated the way that you would like to be treated. The alternative to the Golden Rule is the Platinum Rule: “Treat others the way they want to be treated.”

We like this way of thinking, especially as we talk with those reaching out to us by phone or in person. We always do our best to get a feel for what people who talk to us really need and actually want.

Some simply need information to comparison shop. They are primarily interested in getting factual information, clearly spelled out. That is always fine with us. We are always happy to help with prices, installation questions and warranty information.

Others call in a panic, overwhelmed by the sudden medical needs of someone they care about. They may need more of our time to really listen to what they are facing before we offer any suggestions to them. We can well understand how intense it is to have your world turned upside down when someone gets injured or gets very ill. We’re happy to talk to these folks as well.

Sometimes we talk to the same person multiple times before they are ready to commit to a product or a home visit. We want to honor that person’s decision-making process, knowing there may be lots of emotions or changing circumstances behind his or her questions. We get that, too.

The point is, we never want to underestimate or undervalue any individual’s circumstances. We try to provide as much information as we can to everyone — in the way they are asking us to provide it. That’s the Platinum Rule in our understanding of it, and a great rule to follow in business, as well as throughout life.
